So Who's Getting Any Younger?

After noticing that things were becoming dimmer, I had an optometrical examination of my eyes. After an hour of testing, the optometrist declared that my eyes were perfectly normal 'for a man your age'.

However tempting it was to wipe the smirk from her face, a less Neanderthal and more modern, caring, and sensitive approach, such as creating a bulb which would deliver more light at night, seemed to be a more practical solution.

Compare Side View of PAR 16 to Kalokalo 15 LED Reading Light-Click to Enlarge We wanted to ensure the ability to replace a PAR 16 incandescent or halogen bulb without modification to the fixture and allow for the ability to flush mount our LED light in an engine room, as a stand alone LED light instead of just a replacement L.E.D. bulb.
It took a bit of doing on our tooling, but we were able to allow our current regulator (instead of a cheap, ineffective resistor. Read more about this here). You can see the field effect transistor (FET, also known as a 'little black thingy') sticking up in the center of the light. Click to Enlarge As always, in our efforts to produce a durable product, the next possible 'weak link' is the attachment method to the yachts wiring. We use fully tinned wire pigtails on our Kalokalo reading and spot lights (as with our entire product line) so that the connection to your boats wiring can be made completely water and corrosion proof. If, however, you would prefer the convienence of a halogen-type (g4) pin replacement, we are also now providing this based on customer demand (but we still think it's silly!)
The first place we indentified on our own vessel, 'Shangri-La', was the dining table light. It gives as as much light as the 20 watt halogen did, uses far less power, and doesn't heat the inside of the cabin like the halogen did. (The kero light next to it is for romantic dinners, not a statement about reliability!) S/V Shangri-La with LED Cabin Light-Click to Enlarge

This is an ordinary household fixture that I think we purchased for about US$10, and is really of no less quality than some of the so-called marine fixtures at 5x the price.

I have this fixture mounted on the nav station so that I can either swing the light over the nav table for navigation (or working on a project) -OR- I can move it into the saloon for reading at night.

Underway at night, we just leave the light on and press the bell of the fixture down to rest on the nav table. Enough light comes out of the old ventilation slits to act as a night light without disturbing the off watch. When the off-watch gets woken up (opinion is always prematurely!), instead of fumbling for a switch, just push the light up. The old watch then comes below decks, updates the chart and log, and finally gets a snooze.
