We have been asked to produce a light as a sail and power boat navigation (running and mast mounted) LED light replacement bulb many times with more LED's so it can be seen at yet a greater distance. Until now, we were a little reluctant to go along with the industry trend to simply throw more LED's into our product as a matter of individual integrity.
| LED lights are measured by their brightness (intensity), the 'mcd' (millicandella) number in our specifications. Two LED's are NOT twice as bright as a single LED. For example, if you take a water hose and turn on the tap, the water will only shoot out of the hose for a given distance, say 2 meters. If you have a second identical hose connected to the same source (which has infinite supply, for the smart alecks!), the water will still only shoot from the hose 2 meters, but you will have twice as much water coming out.A light bulb works in a similar manner. The light will travel the same distance, but the target area will be larger and easier to see within the distance that the light will travel. | ![]() |

Our lights provide a greater safety margin because of their redundant circuit design. If you use an incandescent bulb and it fails open ('burns out'), you have no light at all. With our lighting products, even if a single LED fails open, all of the LED's remaining will continue to operate. An even more rare occurrence is for the LED to short circuit , in which case you will loose 1/3 of the LED's on a single row. In the event of the current regulator failing, you would still have a working masthead light, able to be seen at the same distance, as each row of LED's are electrically independent of each other.
| We have found that even with our own experience, that there is often a lot to learn from people who are actually 'doing it'.
Before we introduce a new LED running light or cabin light, we have them beta tested by cruising yachts here in Fiji. We also have
some of the local charter boats, both power and sail, to further test our products in daily use. A long term customer, Bob Wise of 'So It Goes', had a very unfortunate event happen on a passage, but he gave us a very nice, real life, data point about the water-fastness of our lights:
| Along with our waterproofing, all of these factors combine to make our Masina lights ideal for tricolor or running LED light replacements. The Masina Malosi is intended to replace a 360˚ vertical filament light bulb; the Masina 'Afa a stern, bicolor, or steaming LED light bulb; and the Masina Kuaka as a festoon (a light bulb that looks like a fuse) bulb replacement, often seen in individual port, starboard and stern running lights. |

| Our Masina lights have a range statistically in excess of 2 nautical miles. Since the distance a light is visible is as much a function of environmental conditions as the performance of the light itself, please follow this link for a very thorough (but readable) explanation on the subject. | |||

Never ones to rest on our laurels, in October 2007 we switched to the Nichia 'DS' series of LEDs, which has the most efficient 'filiment'
available today. Also, based on customer input, in May of 2008, we have had a running change to incorporate a customers suggestion on our spacer, which is needed for the Aqua-Signal series of tricolor lights. The change wasn't driven by failures, but by a great suggestion from a customer to give the 'belt and suspender' security that you need on a light as important as this!

The top light is a Bebi 30 LED Masina Malosi light, rated at >10500 mcd (typical), and another brand of waterproof light, which advertises 270,000 mcd. Also note the colour difference between our Nichia devices and the other brand. |

| IMPORTANT-PLEASE NOTE: We were reliably informed (27 Sep 08) that our 'regular' Masina Malosi lights, when fitted into an AquaSignal Tri-colour combo manufactured (in likely) 2007 or 2008, did not render the green to be within COLREG spec. We immediately addressed this, and we now (10 November 08) offer our Masina Malosi Vevela to put the green back into specification. | As stated elsewhere on this site, our lights are not
certified by any agent of any government, and, are thus, used at the customer's own risk. We nevertheless believe our lights
to be in compliance with COLREG (reference here). You may also reference the COLREG colour co-ordinates here and compare the defined ranges to the photographs below. |
