Developing an effective, ocean-proof, inexpensive, all-round LED anchor light, which could also be mass-produced, posed a challenge to Bebi Electronics. |
| After experimenting with a number of materials, we hit upon the concept of using a 25mm UPVC end cap as a form and final cover for the LED assembly. |  |

In a more recent development, and after input from various sailing a cruising bulletin boards, we are now offering the Lulu Kaukaua with 5 meters of tinned cable as a removable LED anchor light, perfect for trailer boats. |

Due to the everyday, commonplace nature of UPVC, it is a material that is often overlooked.
In actuality, it has some incredible physical characteristics, which accounts for it's use
throughout the boating industry. We chose to machine the cap to our purposes, as opposed to injection
molding, due to a cost benefit analysis of the cost of the mold over the expected sales life of the product.
As a nice side benefit, the light can be easily and neatly mounted to a 25mm (1") PVC pipe for a mast. |
| The top of the Owl is drilled to accept a screw eye (the Lulu Kaukaua is not drilled, it is intended to be hung from the 5 meter cable). As of 20 February 2007, we have finally found a source for a quality, stainless steel, eyescrew (screw eye) to suspend the light with, and it is included in our prices. As always, our prices are also inclusive of REGISTERED Fast Post Shipping for traceability ('Priority Air Mail' to Americans) world-wide, with a flat US$ 6.50 per order to cover processing the order. |

We had been asked to provide our Owl LED anchor light, as well as our Beka Kaukaua Anchor and Cockpit light many times with a cigarette lighter plug. We had resisted for some time, as we didn't want to burden customers who didn't want it with paying the price of something they were going to cut off. Finally, sense sunk in at this end, and we now offer the choice of the Lulu (means 'Owl' in English) Kaukaua with a cigarette lighter plug already mounted. |
| We had been asked for, and provided a blue light to hang from the rigging so many times, that when Phillip and Leslie of 'S/v Carina' asked again, we decided to make it a production item for 2012. You must not use it alone as an anchor light, but to compliment your existing Owl anchor light. This is all perfectly legal to COLREG, which allows deck lights so long as they cannot be confused with a navigation light | |

We also have been asked by not only ocean cruisers, but by many coastal cruisers, to produce our Owl (or Lulu Kaukaua) light with a 'photo-switch' (also called an 'electric eye' or 'light-sensing switch'). After much testing of various components to produce a switch, in April 2009, we have begun offering these lights with an optional photoswitch. |
| The reason for the delay is that most light sensing switching circuits rely on what is called an LSR-Light Sensing Resistor. Although fine for sheltered, land use, these do not waterproof well and are the most common cause of failure of our competitor's products. By using a photo-transistor in a T-1 case, the switch's ability to percieve light not only duplicates that of the average human eye, but it can also be reliably weather sealed. |  |

Electrically, we use an integral linear current regulator to provide maximum light intensity without negatively impacting the life of the LED's. We have had a light on 'Shangri-La' in continuous test for over 18 months without any sign of deterioration or discoloration in the lenses. It has been repeatedly subject to system voltages greater than 15 volts and as low as 11.5. The light has been subjected to tropical storms and the harsh radiation of the tropical sun. |
| We have beat on test lights with a 16-ounce (453.59237 gram) hammer and the only way we can get it to break is to deliver a slanting blow onto the electrical components themselves. We have put the lights into fires. We have submerged the lights to 1 atmosphere (32 feet) for 12 hours. We have even put test units into a furnace (see for yourself here). |  |

| We have found that even with our own experience, that there is often a lot to learn from people who are actually 'doing it'.
Before we introduce a new LED running light or cabin light, we have them beta tested by cruising yachts here in Fiji. We also have
some of the local charter boats, both power and sail, to further test our products in daily use. A long term customer, Bob Wise of 'So It Goes', had a very unfortunate event happen on a passage, but he gave us a very nice, real life, data point about the water-fastness of our lights:

(For those who have been cruising for a long time, a C-Dory is a very pretty power boat, NOT a Cape Dory sailboat, something I learned, to my chagrin!) |

* In this application, 'Lulu' is not a state of mind. In the Fijian, Tongan, or Samoan languages, it is the word for Owl, the well known nocturnal avian hunter. Kaukaua literally means 'strong'. In this usage however, it has the same meaning as 'jumbo economy size' would to a Madison Avenue copywriter.
