Fijian Vonu*Fijian Vonu*

Illuminated Marine LED Strip Light-Click to Enlarge Just like the story which led to the creation of our very popular Fautasi light when we were approached by a cruising customer in Mexico to create something similar, but as an overhead (ceiling) dome light, we ALWAYS listen to our customers, and we always enjoy getting requests for making unique lights to light up your cabin.
The end result after literally a year from a sketch to a finished product is our Vonu. Since Fiji has many beautiful indiginous woods, and we chose to use dakua salusalu (Decussocarpus vitiensis) for it's beauty. Since this light is hand-crafted by our employee's from a renewable resource, each one is slightly different from another in it's appearance, but will still enhance the beauty of your yacht's saloon Switched and Unswitched Wood Shell Marine LED Dome Lights-Click to Enlarge
Top View of a Vonu 24 LED Saloon Dome Light Size is, of course, paramount, and not just for small boat sailors. Too large a light will look 'clunky' in a saloon, too small and the stained headliner from the light it replaces will become apparent. After MUCH experimentation
In keeping with our belief that a customer should never pay for something they don't need (or want), the Vonu is, of course, available with, or without, an integral switch. If you would prefer a switched unit, we also added a dimmer function of sorts: Press the switch one direction for full LEDs, the other for only the outer ring of LEDs for when you need less light, or just for 'improving the mood' in the cabin. Color Comparison Between a Warm White and a Pure White LED Dome Light-Click to Enlarge Knowing that Henry Ford almost went broke by refusing to off his Model 'T' in anything else but black, you may order your Vonu lights in either Warm White, or Pure White, colours. (in the photo to the left, the pure white is the single lamp, the other seven are warm white).
Although these photographs are of the Vonu Levu (24 volt) version, Jaap and Renee of 'S/v De Ware Jacob' were kind enough to take, and allow us to use, them. In their words, "A real difference with the original ceiling lights. There is light."
Illumination Level of Warm White Vonu LED Dome Lights-Click to Enlarge   Renee finds the light level produced by the Vonu mounted on the ceiling is more than sufficient to read music by. (Please note that because of the gloss white headliner, the light in their salon photographs a bit less 'warm' than it is by eye).
Besides being a nice close up of the light, the photos and the items in the lower-left hand corner give a more true representation of the actual emitted colour of the Vonu in the cabin.   Illuminated Colour Level of Warm White Vonu LED Dome Lights-Click to Enlarge
Illumination Level of Warm White Vonu LED Dome-like Ceiling Lights-Click to Enlarge   Although initially Jaap and Renee wanted most of the lights without a switch, they very much liked the apparent dimming effect of being to be able to select only the outer ring of lights in the salon, and changed their order to reflect this.

*Vonu is the generic Fijian word for a green sea turtle. These wonderful, and gentle creatures have evolved a defense against all but one species on earth - man. Because of the large quantity of tasty flesh, they are still (illegally) taken by Pacific Islanders as a food source to a very poor peoples, but their largest extinction pressures come from plastic bags carelessly tossed or washed into the ocean, or as a by-catch of netting. There is a wide body of literature about them, you can start at the wikipedia entry found here.

WWF, the World Wildlife Federation, South Pacific Office, has an active Vonu conservation project in Nakalou Village in the Macuata Providence of Vanua Levu, Fiji. You can learn more about them here.

The background photo ('wallpaper', if you will) is a piece of
masi that we've had for years. Masi is a piece of cloth made by felting the bark of the mulberry tree, and then (usually) printed by pressing base-relief wooden 'story boards' against the cloth. A photo of this art work can be found here.

And, yes, as a former wooden boat person, I know that the ceiling is to be found on the inside of hull, over the frames, but we're in business to sell product, not teach nautical terminology!
